How To Play The Newlywed Game and Survive

Couples’ game night almost meant the end of my marriage. The Newlywed Game is great fun, but caution needs to be applied when playing. Here are the rules, a ton of questions, and some advice to keep you safe and sane.

How to Play the Newlywed Game

  • To win the game a couple has to score more points by answering more questions correctly then the other married couples
  • A handful of blue and pink cards to write answers on with a marker per team is needed
  • A prize for the winning married team
  • Couples break into teams
  • The host asks the wives to leave the room and ask each husband to answer three questions; the husband writes his answer on a separate blue card and puts them away so they can not be seen
  • The wives rejoin their husbands and the same three questions are asked; each time the answer to the question is compared to what the husband had written on the blue card
  • Each correct answer from this round receives five points which is added to the couples overall score
  • The next round starts as the husbands are asked to leave the room
  • The wives are then asked four questions with the first three being worth ten points each and the fourth question being the “25 Point Bonus Question” as seen on the original TV show
  • The wives write their answers on the pink cards which are hidden for when the men return
  • The three questions are asked and each man answers how he thought his wife answered the question
  • The answers are compared to the cards and points are awarded for correct answers
  • Last, the “25-point bonus question” is asked and answered in the same fashion as the early rounds.
  • Finally, the points are tallied and compared to determine the winner; again, most points by a couple wins the prize
  • The actual television game show has changed over the years and there are many variations of how the game can be played; various options and add-ins are displayed below
